Peer Support Worker - Benjamin
Hey, my name is Benjamin. I am a Zambian. I was born in a family of three and am the first born child followed by my little sister and brother. I grew up in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. My life has been a journey for me to grow up and get educated. It’s by God’s grace I managed to finish my education.
I obtained the Grade 7 certificate in 2016 and a Grade 9 certificate in 2018, I received my Grade 12 certificate in 2022. I have since got a certificate in Psycho Social Counseling.
I faced I lot of challenges growing up. I used to get sick often such that I was not able to go to school. My parents sacrificed a lot for me to get educated. I went through things that made me strong. My dad got sick in 2012 and had to stop working. It was a challenge for us to take him for treatment but by the love and grace of God, we managed to take him for treatment at the University Teaching Hospital of Zambia and He got well in 2014. So as the first born of the family, I was 13 when I started to look for a place where I could work in industry with my mother, just to earn something to help our family. Sometimes we used to eat only one meal a day. This pushed me to keep working so that I could help my family until my Dad finally went back to work in 2015. This was a great thing that had happened to my family. From there I went back to school. It was a challenge for me to grow up and reach at this stage.
I started working again in 2019 at Trade Kings Company as a general worker for one year. After that I went to Big Tree Company (Trade Kings Group) and also worked in a shop in the capital city of Lusaka. This occurred when I was still at school.
All of this has caused me to know that God is alive and he sees his children, because He was there for me and my family when we were going through difficult situations. From that I learned what love and hope is.
I would love to be a peer support worker because of what I have gone through in my life. I have learned different things. I learned how to overcome depression and anxiety and who you can go to when you are facing problems in life. I even learned what kind of a person you can seek for advice in life. I would love to help those who are going the depression and anxiety.
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
