What Bubba Teaches Us

In the iconic movie, Forrest Gump, Forrest befriends a military man named Bubba. Bubba is obsessed with shrimp. He knows everything about shrimp. And he loves talking about shrimp. And he loves dreaming about operating his own shrimp business one day. Shrimp seems to be the all-encompassing factor of his life.

There is an author of one of the books of the Bible in Psalms, Psalm 119. There are 150 psalms. Out of all these psalms, Psalm 119, stand out. This psalm is 2 1/2 times longer than any other psalm in the Book of Psalms, with a whopping 176 verses. Most of the other psalms touch on multiple veins, but not the Psalm 119. It is laser focused on one thing – how much the author loves God’s Word. Here are the first 10 verses.

1Blessed are they that are perfect in the way,
Who walk in the law of Jehovah.
Blessed are they that keep his testimonies,
That seek him with the whole heart.
Yea, they do no unrighteousness;
They walk in his ways.
Thou hast commanded us thy precepts,
That we should observe them diligently.
Oh that my ways were established
To observe thy statutes!
Then shall I not be put to shame,
When I have respect unto all thy commandments.
I will give thanks unto thee with uprightness of heart,
When I learn thy righteous judgments.
I will observe thy statutes:
Oh forsake me not utterly.
9
Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee:
Oh let me not wander from thy commandments.

Bubba’s love for shrimp is the perfect example of how God wants us to love his Word. We show we love something by how much we talk about it. May Bubba challenge you to love God’s Word as much as he loves shrimp!

“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
