The Importance of God’s Word

The Victory Tips Program is Bible-based. Is a Bible-based program advantageous? To the non-christian, the Bible can be easily ‘written off’ as a book of rules, a book too deep to be really understood and useful in our lives. But to the committed Christian, the Bible is a book of Life! A book that transforms lives. Millions of people absolutely love God’s Word. If the Bible is so great, can the Bible heal mental illness? The answer is an emphatic Yes!

For that reason alone, millions of people love God’s Word. For this reason let’s take some time to investigate the importance of the Bible.

Look at how the Book of John starts:

Chapter 1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

Before anything existed, the Bible existed. Quite astounding to consider.

Let’s read 2 more verses from John Chapter 1.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

So, in the beginning was the Word. And the Word created things. And in the Word is Life.

A monumental claim.

2) Let’s see what the Book of Psalms says about the importance of God’s Word. Psalms are song lyrics used in songs in the Old Testament days. There are 150 psalms.

Let’s look at Psalm 1:

The first 3 verses are below:

1. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

These are the opening words in the Book of Psalms. It opens with actions of godly people. First it lists actions that godly people do not do.

a) The blessed person rejects the counsel of the ungodly.

b) They do not stand in the way of the ungodly person. (One could say, they don’t hang around with ungodly people.)

c) They do not sit in the seat of scornful people.

Then it lists what godly people do do:

Verse 2 says they meditate on God’s Word.

What is meditation? It can be the simple action of speaking God’s Word. You can read it over and over. Or, you can memorize it and say it over and over.

How often does the godly person meditate on God’s Word? The author of Psalm 1 says, “day and night”.

Would you say the author esteems God’s Word?

What does the author of Psalm 1 say will happen when you meditate on God’s Word day and night? He will be like a tree that is planted by a river of water in which it brings forth fruit. And he will be a person who prospers in whatever he does. Would you like to prosper and succeed at whatever you do?

Let’s not overlook what the Psalmist thinks about the Bible. He says, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord.” The author loves God’s Word. How many of us can say we love God’s Word? Good question.

3) Let’s look at another, Psalm 119. Out of all 150 psalms, Psalm 119 is the longest psalm, with 176 verses. It is 2 ½ times longer than the next longest psalm. And the focus on the Psalm is how much the writer loves God’s Word. Think of it: every single verse points to God’s Word. That is astounding. I wonder what God could be saying about the importance of His Word?

4) Let’s look at Joshua Chapter 1. Joshua has now become the leader of Israel and God’s wants to give Joshua courage that he will succeed in being a good leader.

God says to Joshua:

6  There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that 9thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good 8success.

God reiterates several times to be strong and courageous. And he tells him how:

In verse 8 he says: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night.” God tells Joshua to speak his Word day and night.

The only way you can really do this is if you memorize God’s Word.

What does the author of the Book of Joshua say will happen to Joshua if he does this? He will prosper and have good success. Would you like to prosper and have good success?

5) Let’s look at Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…”

How many of us can say that God’s Word dwells richly in us?

6) Let’s look at Deuteronomy 6:7-9

7  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

How many of us teach God’s Word to our children? How many of us teach God’s Word diligently? Every Christian wants to live pleasing in God’s eye’s but how many of us want to do everything he says for us to do?

The Bible says to tell it to your children when you sit in your home, when you walk by the way, and when you lie down?

It also says to bind it on your hand and on your forehead. God is deeply serious about us making his Word an important part of our day.

He also says to write it on your door posts and on your gates.

God is saying he wants his Word always around us. And he said that back when they didnt have the internet bombarding our attention all day long. How much more do we need God’s Word impacting our days today?

Do you see how important it is to make God’s Word a big part of your day?
